The consultation on the Future Directions of the National Regulatory System for Community Housing (NRSCH) closed on 21 April 2026.
The consultation invited stakeholders to share perspectives on how the NRSCH is operating and how it could continue to support a strong, responsive, and effective community housing sector into the future.
The NRSCH National Office received a range of written submissions and survey responses. Stakeholder feedback covered a broad range of issues, including the strengths of the current system, areas for improvement, and considerations for a future‑ready regulatory framework.
A draft summary report has now been prepared that synthesises stakeholder submissions and provides an evidence base to inform future policy development, system design work and intergovernmental considerations of options to sustain a nationally consistent regulatory assurance framework.
Next steps
The Summary report and submissions will be shared with the Community Housing Modernisation Working Group to support discussions and advice on potential modernisation options. The Community Housing Modernisation Working Group's role is to facilitate Commonwealth, state and territory government advice and collaboration on potential policy and regulatory reforms for the community housing sector, including (but not limited to) the NRSCH.
We thank all stakeholders who took the time to contribute their views and insights. We will continue to provide updates as information becomes available.
